What is Forest School?
'A Forest School is an Innovative Educational Approach to Outdoor Play and Learning in a Natural Wooded Area'
The philosophy of Forest School is to offer children the chance to grow as an individual through achievable tasks and to develop their sense of well-being. It shows them how to be resourceful and to make use of the world around them.
As the Forest School movement grows in popularity, Forest School is a long term programme delivered by a Forest School Leader and other trained practitoners who have an enthusiasm and aptitude for outdoor activities within a natural environment.
Our practitioners develop a strong stable presence in the natural environment to ensure our children are safe, secure and are offered excellent childcare and educational development.
Forest Schools move the 'classroom' into the outdoor environment and there are many widely recognised advantages of this approach to Early Years Education as Forest School incorporates all the essential areas of the Early Years Curriculum.
Principles that underpin Forest Schools have been identified as:
♥ Forest School is for everybody. √
♥ Forest School is a process which builds on an individual's innate motivation and positive attitude to learning, offering them the opportunities to take risks, make choices and initiate learning for themselves. √
♥ Forest School is organised and run by qualified Forest School Leaders. √
♥ Forest School maximises the learning potential of local woodland through frequent and regular experiences throughout the year. √
♥ Forest School helps everyone to understand, appreciate and care for the natural environment. √
At Basnett Street Nursery School we have always placed a high importance on outdoor learning and from April 2014 we extended this approach by introducing Forest School for children on certain days of the week.
Our children have access to a range of outdoor experiences with a fully trained Forest School Leader who will plan the activities that will scaffold the children learning and play; this enables our children to build on their own experiences and realise their potential while exploring the natural world.
Whilst already having some of the largest outdoor areas of any Early Years provider in the local area, we are fortunate to have an on-site Forest School area - so lots of time in the forest!
Forest School allows all our special children the freedom to explore and experience the outdoor natural world and we hope that by allowing the children opportunities to learn in a new exciting way through Forest School sessions, they will be excited, awe inspired and amazed by nature!
